How to Know If Someone is Worth Pursuing in Two Dates or Less

Required reading for singles
This is absolutely the best, most practical book I've read for singles who are looking for a long-term relationship or marriage partner. It could be subtitled "How to Avoid a Divorce"! The advice is very concrete and requires you to look honestly at yourself before looking for a spouse. Dr.Warren's counseling experience with couples whose relationships are failing give him a unique perspective on the kinds of things that make relationships work. As a 40-something divorced woman I found this book very valuable. I also gave it to my college son and told him to read it or else!

Must Read
Great book that can offer a lot of insight. Many of the topics listed are things we latently are aware of. And, because of that this book is important because we need to be reminded of them, and further look into ourselves in how we feel about these subjects. We have to know ourselves. In addition to the many topics listed, the MMPI test Warren recommended shows he's spent a lot of time in his profession. Very refreshing book that is for single and married people as well. This book can add some reality-based criteria that one should consider to keep our feet on the ground because at times, we put these criteria on the back-burner, which means paying later.

changed my view of dating forever
This is a wonderful book. I read it in one afternoon and it totally changed my ideas of how a relationship should form. Dr. Warren clearly understands what the real "rules" of dating should be, and how it might actually be possible to "win." I recommend this book highly.

The Official Rent-A-Husband Guide to a Safe, Problem-Free Home: Quick, Easy, and Effective Solutions for Do-It-Yourselfer Improvements and Repairs
Published in Paperback by Broadway Books (20 February, 2001)
Authors: Kaile R., Jr. Warren and Jane Maclean Craig
Average review score:

A Handy Guide To Home Maintenance
The author of the book, Kaile Warren, Jr., is also the owner of the Rent-A-Husband handyman business. As such, he has real life experience concerning what the target audience for this book wants and needs to know. It is a handy basic primer covering a myriad of topics on simple household repair problems, storage solutions for all areas of the house, and home safety and security tips. All in all it is a really nice book to keep as a handy quick reference.

The first section of the book concentrates on basic terminology and provides information on which tool is right for a particular job. Everything from power tools to nails gets a quick explanation. Also included in this section is advice on how to tackle common household repairs to faucets, toilets, electrical outlets, faulty lamps and switches, and tips on installing floor tile and sheet viny. One other thoughtful addition is the discussion of when to decide not to take on a repair job and instead call in an expert.

The section on storage solutions for all areas of the house is well done. It includes buying tips for a variety of modular and other units. There are even instructions for the adventurous who want to build some units for themselves.

Part three of the book discusses and illustrates several facets of home security and home safety considerations. For those living alone, this section of the book alone may well be enough justification for buying it.

If you fall within the specific target audience (the title will give you a clue as to whether you do or don't), this is a very nice book to have.

A Cut (Way) Above the Rest
As a new homeowner and a woman, this book arrived just in the nick of time! It is incredibly well-written, and completely captivating in its style. Most importantly, it provides the key to the previously forbidden, male dominated world of home repair. I hope the team of Warren and Craig provide many sequels. I can't wait for the next one!

Spectacular!
I have just completed one of the most enjoyable reading experiences I have ever had in THE OFFICIAL RENT-A-HUSBAND GUIDE TO A SAFE, PROBLEM-FREE HOME. Since I am a recent home owner, I was forced to enter the relatively "new waters" of the home repair book arena. Based on my past experiences with such books, it was not something I was looking forward to. But what an utterly delightful surprise I was in for. The writing here is so tremendous, it sets a new standard for the entire "home" sector. An outstanding accomplishment!

Magnetizing Your Heart's Desire

Author: Sharon A. Warren

Finally, a Self-Help Book that Truly Inspires!
Sharon's book, "Magnetizing Your Heart's Desire" is the first self-help book I've read in many, many years which truly got me excited and motivated to take action in making changes in my life. Fun, inspiring and empowering, her words, stories and exercises are sheer pleasure to read and live by! One is empowered to take charge, with the help of our generous and loving universe, rather than continue to let things "happen" to us, as if we were helpless victims of a prescribed fate. And throughout it all, I felt lifted by "wings" of encouragement, as if I had my own private cheer-leader desiring the best in life for me... A wonderful book, which I have given as gifts, and recommend to my dearest friends. Thank you!

Amazing Sharon
I ordered Magnetizing Your Heart's Desire about 2 weeks ago and I wanted to savor each page by reading it slowly instead of devouring it in one reading. The book is so delicious, uplifting and so inspiring. Ms. Warren has such an incredible gift for expressing herself and for making the material so clear, simple and so yummy [which is now one of my favorite words]. I love the graphics and there are so many profound statements that most of my book is underlined and starred. I recommend this book to anyone who is really serious about magnetizing their true heart's desire. If you don't like your present reality, it is time to magnetize a beautiful new reality by using the principles in this book. As Abraham said: don't accept reality unless it is perfect. This book gives me the inspiration I need to magnetize my heart's desires. I have already started to "play" on some of the projects. Ms. Warren's caring ways really shine through in her book. I feel like she is "working" with me on magnetizing my heart's desires. A MUST READ FOR THOSE SEEKING TRUE JOY.

One of those Ah! Books!!
Sharon Warren, I want to THANK YOU for your book, Magnetizing Your Heart's Desire. It's magnificient! I am so thrilled working with the book's material and it has really lifted my spirits. You have a wonderful way of writing-it is so infectious. I love the Board of Directors and now have 17 directors (instead of 12). I am recommending this book to everyone and feel it should be on every bookshelf!! This book gets my complete vote as a book that SIMPLY MUST BE READ it will change your life forever! What we're searching for: Hope
Since finding this book several years ago I have purchased many copies and give them to grieving people of all ages. I have given this book to members of my family at the loss of my father-in-law, to parents who have lost children (born and unborn), to adult children at the loss of parents and grandparents. With it's wonderful, soaring artwork; it's message of peacefulness and hope expressed in simple yet meaningful words; this book touches the center of children of all ages. I treasure my copy and have been told by many others that they too treasure their's. I heartily recommend this book if you're searching for hope, peace, and meaning for yourself or for those you love.

A God Send
The beautiful picture and the title on the cover captured my attention first, but what lies between the pages of this book has altered my life from wondering what heaven is like, to knowing. It is what every person hopes for, but can't describe. In this book, Heaven is beautifully illustrated as to what a loving god would and will provide his children who have suffered endlessly throughout this world. For all those who have lost a loved one and are imagining where and how they are- your search stops when you read this book. It can also lessen the fear of dying because it is so peaceful and reasuring to what you know in your heart is true. Read it! You will not be disapointed, unless you strictly believe that Heaven doesn't exist. Shortly after I bought this book, a young friend died and I gave this book to his family. It will always remind me of him, for finding this book was no accident. It was meant to be. This book is truly and inspiration.

Wonderful for all ages.
With the unexpected death of my father, a friend gave us this book to read and return. I read it to my 5 year old daughter and found myself most touched by both the words and illustrations. It was so perfect that I bought a copy for us and then shared it with my 75 year old mother. Three months later, my best friend's sister unexpectedly died leaving a 4 year old daughter and husband. I passed my copy on to them. I bought a new copy. This book shifts the focus from the end of life to the passing of life. It is a clear and beautifully told story that lifts the spirits of readers of all ages.

Father and Child Reunion: How to Bring the Dads We Need to the Children We Love
Published in Hardcover by J. P. Tarcher (04 January, 2001)
Author: Warren Farrell
Average review score:

Sadly Ahead of its Time
I've owned this book for four hours and have read most of it. I have experienced firsthand the shocking bias and injustice towards fathers, and undoubtedly have much more to face. This book is sadly ahead of its time. It cuts right through the political correctness, media ignorance, feminist propoganda, and false sense of equality most men feel they have. Farrell backs up his statements with facts and reliable data, and extends his credibility by explaining why he originally agreed with but now rejects the oversold feminist movement. Here in Iowa, Governor Vilsack has recently announced the creation of a task force to determine how fathers can play a bigger role in the lives of their children. While its name, "The Task Force for Responsible Fatherhood", makes it sound like a quest for any remaining gestapo tactics left unused against fathers, it appears to recognize that both parents can engage in the financial and emotional support of children. If the final report, due Spring of 2002, acknowledges half of what Farrell clearly explains, and half of that works its way into legislation a few years later, perhaps Iowa children will begin to benefit from the fathers they are being deprived of by malicious mothers, archaic family courts, ignorant social workers and psychologists, and lazy and greedy attorneys. If you want to be ahead of the times, Farrell is not only fair, he is right!

The father's bible
Thirty years ago I opened the first refuge (shelter) in the world for battered women and their children. I was aware from the beginning that there was a huge injustice being done to men. Domestic violence is not a gender issue. Violence is a learned pattern of behavior from early childhood. Governments, courts, social workers, probation officers turned their backs on the vital need for children to be loved by both their mothers and their fathers. I have just finished reading Father and Child Reunion and I am breathless with admiration for Warren Farrell's love and compassion for parents. I have always followed his work and his writings but this time he has surpassed himself and written 'the bible of fatherhood.' In very simple easily understood sentences, Warren Farrell manages to turn the often difficult and complicated concept into lucid prose. Farrell understands the human condition is fallable and woefully human but he does not pull his punches when he describes the last thirty years of destruction meted out to fathers and men in geneneral. This book should be made widely available to all markets. Anyone who loves children and wants to build a better world for them, should read this book and then send copies to their friends. Erin Pizzey

Finally, the truth of divorce, custody, and single parenting
I am a social worker, and was a social work graduate student ( I had to drop out of graduate school due to lack of funds and no assistantship.

I am also a divorced, non-custodial father.

I have ready many books and research papers about social policy, child welfare, and child welfare practices. Father and Child Reunion is the best publication I read to date about divorce, custody, child support, and social policy. Dr. Farrell writes in a clear, concise, and highly readable style. He has also done his homework. The book is well researched.

This is book needs to be distributed to every family court judge, divorce court judge, and child protective custody worker in North America and the rest of the world.

I have remained anonymous for two reasons. First because my profession is about 70% female and operates under many if not all of the assumptions that Dr. Farrell deconstructs in his book. Second because I want to complete my graduate education.

Buy this book! Give it to your friends! Give it to sons and brothers and fathers and uncles and nephews!

Wisconsin Death Trip
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (April, 2000)
Authors: Michael Lesy and Warren Susman
Average review score:

A HARROWING PORTRAIT
The first of Michael Lesy's books, 'Wisconsin death trip' is as harrowing and breathtaking today as when it was first published, back in the early 1970s. Utilizing a veritable treasure-trove of miraculously preserved glass negative plates taken in rural Wisconsin during the period of the 1880s-early 20th Century, and combining them with newspaper clippings and other snippets of local news from the area and era, Lesy has pieced together an amazing (if bleak) view of life in that day and age. Times were hard, and the challenges faced were many and daunting -- anyone bemoaning the state of life in America today should read this book...anyone who wants a truer sense of American history should read this book. You will never forget it.

On a related note, readers might be interested to know that this book inspired Stewart O'Nan's great novel 'A prayer for the dying' (also available through amazon.com).

Disturbing, interesting read
I was able to read this book in one day, and wanted more. Being a former resident of this area of Wisconsin made it even more interesting for me, but all that aside, it was one of the most intriguing books I've read in a long time. The photographs are a wonderful testament to life in that era & locale, if you're a collector of old photographs & post-mortem shots this is a great book for your library. Reading about all of the madness surrounding these people, their bizarre and sad behaviors really makes you think. The author's conclusion really draws it all together for you.

A reading experience
There is relatively little I can say about this book.

The book is essentially photographs and news clippings from a newspaper in Wisconsin from about 1890 to 1910. Interspersed are snippets from novels dealing with life during the period.

Turning the pages, reading the articles, and looking not at the pictures but into the eyes of the people in the photographs, one gets a sense not of some sterilized, backward glance at these people as some great societal force, not as a band of pioneers, but as very human people, who die in childbirth, die as children, die of diseases that sweep through whole towns and infect the entire state with fear, go insane, murder, and still maintain enough inner dignity to be able to look into the lens of a camera and mask most of their emotions long enough for the half-second exposure but not long enough to pierce the heart of people living a century later. It is pain. It is a death trip.

The book speaks for itself. Actually, it doesn't. The people in word and image speak for themselves.

Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist
Published in Hardcover by Random House (August, 1995)
Author: Roger Lowenstein
Average review score:

the jedi knight of the Ben Graham & Fisher Schools
Before I've read any of the Buffett's records, I was brainwashed by the B-school's currently dominating "efficient market" doctrine. Buffett's records really changed my reviews on finance and investment. This book clearly explains the way Mr. Buffett conducts business and how is it so different from the conventional wisdom, yet so sensible and logical that the investing records of Buffett have been exceptional. I totally recommend this book as the author did a really good job in describling Mr. Buffett's history in investing, as well as his private life. It seems to me the investment philosophy of Buffett is so simple that it looks "easy" to achieve. I hope the author could explain more on what it really takes to do something like that. It's anything but easy.

What You Can Learn From This Book
I just read the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. This book is a great supplement to that decidedly more technical text, and offers excellent insights into what drives Warren Buffett. While the Intelligent Investor is somewhat dated, this book gives you a more updated version of Buffett's exploits and ideas, as well as a fresher look at Buffett's metamorphoses since his days at Columbia. I have read numerous books on Buffett, and I have to agree with Bill Gates' analysis of this book - this is the one to read. An indispensable biography of Buffett, and a must read for anyone keen on Buffett's investment philosophy.

A Biography, NOT an Investment Guide
This well written biography of Warren Buffett is just that, a biography. Those readers seeking Mr. Buffett's investment advice need to look elsewhere. "The Warren Buffett Way" written by Hagstrom or Mr. Buffett's shareholder letter in Berkshire Hathaway's annual reports would be an excellent place to start. In this book Lowenstein descriptively documents the events that shaped Buffett's life beginning with childhood. The reader gains an in depth understanding and appreciation of Mr. Buffett's business acumen. Any disappointment that the reader encounters is probably a result of the fact that Mr. Buffett leads an exceptionally mundane life. As a result, the reader at times will feel compelled to put the book down. If you are fascinated with Mr. Buffett's ability to consistently outperform the market or are a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder this is a must read.

Classical Ballet Technique
Published in Paperback by Univ of Southern Florida (January, 1990)
Author: Gretchen Ward Warren
Average review score:

Best Reference Book
This book by Gretchen Ward has been the most useful and used book that I have as a reference for teaching ballet. The pictures are wonderful. They actually show photos and not poorly drawn pictures. It shows so many movements used in classical ballet, with pictures and descriptions. It also has a wonderful section for teachers, which give you tips and a teaching guide that gives you insight on the order of what you should teach at specific levels. This book is so organized and covers so much material. I love this book and highly recomend it to every teacher who teaches ballet!

Excellent Reference Book
This book is an indispensable reference book for any seriousstudent or instructor of ballet. Its many photographs of professionalsexecuting each step (up to 6 to 8 photographs showing each stage of a step) is extremely thorough. I have both taken and taught ballet for years and I have never seen another book as complete as this one. It provides both inspiration and clarification regarding the numerous ballet basics and steps, while including differences in steps from the different schools of ballet. While this is the more affordable version of the hardcover edition, I would recommend the hardcover edition if you can afford it. This is surely a book that will be looked at numerous times and will remain in your personal library (or dance school, public school, or public library) for many years.

Wonderful Reference
This book is wonderful for those dancers struggling to perfect their tecnique, or trying to learn many different styles. This book, however, is not for learning alone, it is a picture-filled book of ballet tecnique. I have found it to very helpful with the visualization of some complex steps and vocabulary explanations. It is the best book of its kind and a treasure of age-old tecnique finally written down in images for future generations to keep.

Anne of Green Gables (Great Illustrated Classics)
Published in Unknown Binding by Abdo Pub Co (E) (January, 2002)
Authors: L. M. Montgomery, Eliza Gatewood Warren, and Joseph Miralles
Average review score:

great for girls
Anne of Green Gables is about a skinny red haired girl who has both a short temper and a very colorful imagination. She really loves the little farmhouse but the Cuthberts might send her back to the orphanage because Matthew needed a boy about 11 or 12 to help him on the farm.

Sometimes her imagination gets her in trouble. For instance when Marilla asks her to get a pattern from Mrs. Barry she doesn't want to because she imagined the woods between the houses were haunted! The book tells about her life growing up in the 1930's. As she grows, she learns many lessons and meets many friends who help her to become Anne of Green Gables.

This book is wonderful. It is a great book for girls to read. I loved it because the character was funny, spunky, and could talk forever. She reminded me of my sister. Anne never gave up trying to reach her goals. She will keep you interested throughout the whole book!

A memorable classic that touches your heart!
This is one of the best books ever written and the credit goes to spirited Anne (make sure it's spelled with an "e"!) Shirley. It's not often you find such a charming heroine as Anne. ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is the first of a series on this lovable orphan, and it begins with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a respectable brother and sister, living at Green Gables. They are both growing old and need a boy to help out on the farm. But they got a talkative redhead girl instead. Before they can send her back to the orphanage, Anne has managed to win the hearts of Prince Edward Island with her wit and imagination. She seems to affect everyone around her - from busybody Mrs. Rachel Lynde to handsome Gilbert Blythe. And now, Green Gables will never be the same! . . .

It's not often you find such a spirited and lovable heroine as Anne. Captivating and captivatED, Anne is full of enthusiasm and fun, which gets her into all sorts of scrapes. This book is one that you are guaranteed to laugh over, cry over, and never want to put down! It is an ideal novel that you won't want to pass up! (Even if you don't read the rest of the Anne books, read this!)

Children's Literature at it's height
A few weeks ago, I got really sick of today's children's literature. I had read enough mysteries and trashy books about romance to last me a lifetime. So I wanted something else to read, something well-written with a good plot and lifelike characters. I had to look no further than the first book I picked up- Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery.

Anne of Green Gables is the first book in the Anne of Green Gables series. It takes place, as most of L. M. Montgomery's books do, on Prince Edward Island in Canada. This particular story takes place in the town of Avonlea. It follows young Anne Shirley, an orphan brought to Green Gables to help Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on their farm. Much to Anne's dismay, Marilla tells her that they wanted a boy to help around the farm, not a girl. However, Marilla changes her mind and decides to keep the dynamic young girl who would become Anne of Green Gables.

This novel is incredibly written, with well-developed characters and an intricate plot. I absolutely loved it. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great example of children's literature at its height.

The Front Runner
Published in Paperback by Wildcat Press (June, 1996)
Author: Patricia Nell Warren
Average review score:

Angonizing heartbreak and joyful triumphs
The Front Runner is a novel that I will continue to recommend and read several times. The heartfelt agony of the characters, especially Billy and Harlan, is offset by the triumphs they achieve together and seperately. Set in the homophobic world of sports in the 70's, this novel has captured the essence of the inner turmoil and external conflict that any openly or closeted gay felt in the sports arena during this period. Patricia Warren did an outstanding job of giving us the opportunity to delve into the glory of the human spirit and to witness a victory over the persecution of bigots. A love story between two men is not often written that contains feelings of more than lust and quick backroom lays. However, The Front Runner is a rare story of love between two men that touches something in each of us. It is a story of longing and desire, but also one of triumph and agony. The Front Runner set new standards for gay novels and has continued to be a favorite for millions all across the world

This book is guaranteed to change your life!
This is considered by many (myself included) to be the classic gay love story. This book is an exquisitely written piece of literature, tracing track coach Harlan Brown's life, and his love for a young athlete, Billy, all the way the Olympics.
First published in 1973, The Front Runner has been translated into a number of languages, and has sold over ten million copies worldwide. In 1974, TFR was the first gay themed book to hit #1 on the New York Times best seller list. Read it, and you will know why this book has enjoyed such huge popularity over the years. Be warned though, I haven't met a single person who has been able to put this book down once started. It pulls you into the lives of Billy and Harlan, you feel their love, their joy and their pain. And, if you get to the end of the book, and you haven't shed tears, I would be tempted to say that you need to be checked for emotions!

The Goddess is Patricia Nell Warren
How is it that a female story teller so adeptly delved into the emotions and mind of gay men? I was 27 when I first read The Front Runner, it was published when I was only 5 years old. Even though it is a story about life set in the 70s, it is a truly remarkable tale about love, destiny, passion and the search for that special love we all seek. Harlan, the track coach at the center of the book, has paid some tough prices for coming out as a gay man. He lost a wife, a family, and yes it would be easy to say he should never have gotten married and cheating on his wife...through Ms. Warren's words, we see the pain and confusion that his sexual identity has caused him. It is not until he is into his 40s that he finds he can be out and lead a life deserving in respect & love. The tragic ending will move any heart I'm sure, gay or staright or questioning. Along with its sequels, each just as brilliant, TFR is a landmark book that is a celebration of the gay & lesbian community.
